Staunton City Schools Statement Condemning Racism and Affirming the School Division’s Commitment to Fostering an Anti-Racist Environment - June 12, 2020
The Staunton City School Board and members of Staunton City Schools’ staff are saddened and angered by the recent killings of unarmed Black people and the persistence of these inexcusable events in our country.
As the governing body for Staunton’s schools, we cannot be silent. We acknowledge the discrimination and injustices experienced by Black people in our community and across the nation, and urge every member of the Staunton City Schools community to join us in speaking up against racism and injustice – not just in this moment, but in your daily lives. Not only must we speak up, but we must put our words into action.
Racism has no place in our schools. Our students, teachers and staff deserve to learn and work in an environment in which they are free from racial harassment and discrimination. We are urgently continuing the work we began more than two years ago to make our schools equitable and inclusive. Staunton City Schools is committed to dismantling and reimagining systems, policies and practices that potentially impede the advancement of students of color, including:
- the removal of barriers to academic and extracurricular opportunities;
- the restructuring of discipline practices;
- the examination of the division’s hiring practices;
- ongoing diversity and inclusion training for teachers and staff; and
- maintaining equity teams at every school to help teachers provide inclusive instruction to students.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering an inclusive, anti-racist environment where we treat everyone with dignity and respect.
