Shelburne Middle School Homework Policy
At Shelburne Middle School, we believe that homework is an important part of learning. Homework not only gives each child an opportunity for individual practice, but it allows parents to understand what their children are learning; it teaches time management, study skills, and responsibility; and it helps prepare our students for their high school experience.
Teachers use homework as a time for students to build on basic facts, practice independently, improve literacy, and/or prepare for assessments. All homework assigned will have an academic purpose, be meaningful, and will get more rigorous as a student progresses through middle school.
In general, 6th and 7th grade students can expect approximately 90 minutes of homework each evening; 8th grade students can expect approximately two hours of homework each evening. Frequently, homework at all grade levels will also include studying/reviewing for assessments.
The teachers at Shelburne have developed the following homework guidelines/expectations for each of their departments:
All grades will assign homework 3-4 nights a week in science.
6th grade assignments will be approximately 20 minutes in length. Assignments will be given daily as opposed to a weekly review.
7th grade assignments will also be approximately 20 minutes in length. 7th grade will assign a weekly review that will cover review material as well as material taught that week. The weekly review will be set up for approximately 20 minutes of homework four nights out the week.
8th grade will assign between 15 and 30 minutes of homework. 8th grade assignments will be given daily as opposed to the weekly review. Occasionally a weekly review will be given.
the 6th grade, homework will be assigned 3-4 nights a week (for
approximately 15-20 minutes per evening) with occasional projects.
7th grade math teachers will use a weekly cumulative review packet for homework; then number of questions/problems in the packet will vary depending on the difficulty of the topic. This weekly review will be handed out on Monday and will be due on Friday. Occasionally additional small 10-15 minute assignments will be given, as needed, to reinforce/review a topic covered in class that day.
In the 8th grade homework will be assigned 3 to 4 times a week for 15 - 30 minutes each time.
The language arts department will adopt a packet approach for homework, as well as continuing the requirement that every student reads for 30 minutes each evening.
6th Grade: Each week the packet will include three to four tasks to complete.
7th and 8th Grades: Each week the packet will include four to five tasks to complete.
Assignments in the student packets will be centered on grammar, vocabulary, and reading strategy practice. In addition, journal responses will help support the nightly reading at home.
6th Grade: Homework will be assigned 2-3 nights per week.
7th Grade: Students in 7th grade will receive a weekly homework assignment that will be due each Friday. Students should spend approximately 15-20 minutes per evening working on their homework.
8th Grade: Students in 8th grade will receive a weekly homework assignment that will be due each Friday. Students should spend approximately 20-25 minutes per evening working on their homework, and teachers will do daily checks on their progress. In addition, students will be given a weekly writing assignment on a debate topic.
