    Welcome to First Grade!

Read aloud at literacy block time.

    Mrs. Michelle DeMarmels
    school: 332-3938

This is my fourth year teaching first grade at A R Ware.  Prior to that, I taught Head Start at Ware for 4 years, and also directed a child development center in Charlottesville.  I have been working with children for 15 years, and have decided that first grade is the place for me!  I have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, and a master's degree in Elementary Education from The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY.

First Grade is a wondereful year!  This is the year that a child's reading takes off like a rocket, with advances in writing and math not far behind.  Your child will be receiving a weekly newsletter to keep you posted on the SOL's we're currently covering, and to inform you of upcoming events and happenings.

Homework consists of a reading bag filled with books your child is comfortable reading.  Please read each night with your child, and sign the reading log.  While the take-home books may seem too easy for your child, they are on his/her independent level--reading without support.  In the classroom reading groups, your child is reading higher level books with teacher support at their instructional level.
