Once again, let me welcome all families to McSwain Elementary!  We have had a fabulous start with children already learning and engaging in high level thinking!  It is a delight to see so many smiling faces every morning.  Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Last year I began sending a weekly email to all families that have an updated email on Parent Portal.  Typically the email goes out on Sunday evenings.  Upcoming events, news and information are shared.

PTA Kindergarten family mixer, August 21st, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m in the courtyard - Come meet other kindergarten families and teachers!

Fridays specials - Monday’s schedule, with Library being Guidance classes

School safety - Safety is always our first priority!  Throughout the year we practice safety drills with our students and staff.  While we take the drills seriously and staff prepare in the event of an emergency, we want to be sure we are balancing the message we send to children.  We do not want to send a message, either intentionally or unintentionally, that school is a place to be afraid.  Please know that our staff remains calm and caring during drills and that students are asked to follow teacher directions.  This year we are required to have 4 fire drills and 2 lockdown drills within the first 20 school days.  During the remainder of the year we will have a fire drill every month, a tornado drill once and an earthquake drill once.  Please feel free to call if you have any questions.  

Student handbook - While it is a bit daunting to read so much information, I encourage you to do so.  There are changes for the 2018-2019 school year.  One of the changes that I want to highlight is on page 5, “Release of Students”.  The first sentence includes the most significant change.  Please note the wording, written permission is required for us to release your child to anyone other than a parent or legal guardian.  Therefore, we can no longer take phone calls, requesting someone to pick your child up.  An additional change relates to release of student information.  See page 19, related to “Directory Infomation”.  We will no longer designate any student information as directory information.
